Design of Experiments (DOE)

Since the 1970s it has been realised that statistical experimental design and mathematical modelling and optimisation would be of benefit in the engine development process.  With the increasing pressures on development time and advances in computing capability, the application of statistical techniques blossomed in the 1990s The experience gained at Ricardo using DoE techniques covers all aspects of the powertrain development process

The range of DoE methods applied is extensive.  Classical, optimal and Latin hypercube designs are combined with modelling techniques from polynomials to stochastic process models.  Advanced optimisation techniques are also an essential tool and both gradient methods and genetic algorithms are routinely employed on engine and transmission development programmes
