DQ200 Transmission Benchmarking Report

DQ200 Transmission Benchmarking Report

The DQ200 is the latest DSG transmission from VW. It is the first DRY dual clutch transmission to the market and is available from beginning of 2008.

VW claims that the DQ200 is lighter and more efficient than the current 6-speed DSG (known as DQ250) and has a major improvement by adding a 7th gear for better fuel efficiency.

For this new transmission technology Ricardo believe it is imperative to have an independent view regarding the claimed features. This has the benefit of giving a deep understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of this transmission solution and enables customers to make objective decisions based on these findings. To this end Ricardo are undertaking a comprehensive benchmarking report for the DQ200.

Ricardo commit to the investment of the detailed benchmarking study and then provide the results at a vastly reduced rate on a non-exclusive basis. This provides a great saving to customers, who gain a thoroughly objective and impartial analysis and assessment.

In addition to the report purchase there are also options for training courses on the material generated, including examination of the hardware and in-vehicle testing using the DQ200 vehicle used for the benchmarking exercise.

RICARDO'S DQ200 BENCHMARK REPORT CONTENTS  (IN PROGRESS)

Introduction

  • VW DQ200 summary and details of the test vehicle used

Summary Of Transmission Architecture

  • Bill of Materials (BoM)
  • CAD generated 2D layout of internal components (1:1)
  • Photograph-based engineering drawings referred to the BoM

Design and Functionality Review

  • Including detailed analysis of clutch design and assembly, the shift actuation system and the electro-hydraulic system.
  • Including details of unique and novel features and a summary of all major sub-assemblies, with clear reference to the photograph based engineering drawing where appropriate

Transmission Control

  • A comprehensive suite of test-track based manoeuvres will be completed to assess the base shift maps, adaptive strategies and performance.
  • Summary plots will be included to describe the findings and comments made as to their effect on emissions, fuel economy and driveability

Subjective and Objective Transmission Performance

  • Subjective evaluation of transmission performance and driveability will be undertaken by Ricardo’s expert assessors
  • Objective data for all gear-shift types will be produced.  Shift metrics are output and compared to the subjective evaluation.
  • An objective assessment of driveability will also be completed, by generation of the Driveability Response Matrix (DRM), which can be used to effectively assess driveability.

Efficiency Testing

  • To complete representative efficiency testing of a transmission, its true in-vehicle operating conditions must be known. To ensure this, Ricardo will conduct detailed testing to reverse engineer solenoid control and operating pressures for steady state conditions (from chassis dynamometer testing).
  • From the results of the vehicle testing the transmission operating conditions are replicated using Ricardo’s Universal Transmission Controller (UTC) and from this the loaded efficiency testing, spin losses and neutral coast down results will be generated.

Summary of DQ200 Transmission

  • From the results of all the areas of the transmission benchmarking of the DQ200, a high level summary will be generated. This will indicate the key strengths and weaknesses of the transmission including qualitative information on the desirability to customers of individual features.
  • This summary will give a good basis for providing a significant and important contribution to the process of determining future transmission strategy.
